VLAN's across the enterprise

Why is there so little information on enterprise VLAN's? seems it would be a popular thing to do over the internet.

Finance NY VLAN10 -UUNET----> (cloud) ---MCI-----> Finance LA VLAN10

I want my finance deparments in NY and LA to share resources on the same secure VLAN.

Why is this so difficult ?

I know there is alot to it, frame's, packets, tagging, stripping, that makes it very complicated but there should be a fairly straight forward way accomplish this.

There is nothing too it: Simply establish a bridged connection between the two sites! The only problem is that you are stretching your layer2 environment over the WAN. This implies that you have an ethernet segment that reaches from NY to LA.

When you have finshed the bandwidth requirement calculation, you will probably see why this is not a good idea.

You can use tunneling or MPLS technology to achieve this. Both have their pros and cons. This is not simple, however.

Alternatively, many carriers (incl. us) provide this service over their private network. This can be much simpler.
