I have two VTP-related questions.
1) We have a new 6509 switch that will eventually replace our core switch. It is currently on-line with VTP configured in client mode. Can we change the mode to server (leaving the existing VTP server switch on line) with no impact?
2) We would like to change our VTP domain name. Assuming that we have one VTP server mode switch and multiple client mode switches - do we just need to login to each switch and change the name? Will this have the potential of erasing the VLAN information?
Thanks in advance for any assistance or helpful links.

1)As long as the config-revision is the same you can do this
2)You should be ok. Change name on your VTP server switches first, create a dummy VLAN to increase the config-revision, change domain name on other switches. When you are done with renaming, remove the dummy VLAN.

Thanks for the info. Looks like the config-revision is the key to success!

Hi,
isn't there some risk of losing trunk connections between switches in different VTP domains?
"For trunking to be negotiated on EtherChannel ports, the ports must be in the same VTP domain. However, you can use the on or noneg mode to force a port to become a trunk, even if it is in a different domain."

for details.
