I have seen a patch pannel many times but never understood its funn functionality. Any link for that..... Thanks

Hi zaheer,
normally , you would require a patch panel to provide a convenient place to terminate (connect) all of the cable runs coming from different rooms into the wiring closet (or basement, right?). You also connect the cables going to the hub to the cables to the rooms through the patch panel.
Its just to make the cabling organised and to look good. without patch panel, your data center might look chaotic.. its also easy to switch over networks to different rooms, if you have patch panels..
you can search google and find a lot of sites telling about patch panels..
