I have two switches WS-C3548-XL which don't work it if I linked them through WS-G5482(1000baseT).Once has a release 120-5.5.WC.1 and the other has release 120.5.2-XU.
Why does it happen?
What can I do?

First of all make sure the 2 switches have the same IOS version, higher is better.
if you stack them together you can run 1gb trough the gbic's

First things first
1) You need 12.0.5XW to support copper gbic, so upgrade the second switch to same IOS level.

2) Make sure the interface is not admin down and start with just with default config on the port)
3) Do a show post, to make sure that the port has not failed in hardware
4) Make sure the cable pinouts are correct and cable is not bad.
