Exec-Timeout Confirmation

Can somebody confirm that if i am ugrading 2950's using ciscoworks and the ugrade takes longer than expected, say 45mins would the connection be dropped by the exec-timeout if set to 15mins. My understanding is that if there is activity ie "upload in process " this would not timeout at all.

Also do you know how cisoworks carrys out a multiple software upgrade.

1. does it log in to every switch prior to the upgrade to check for connectivity or, does it log in to each switch indivdually only at time of upgrade.

Any help or info greatly appreciated

Jason

That is correct in the boxes we have seen , when we do it manually if the timeout is only 5 minutes and it takes longer than that the tftp transfer for some reason is not seen as legit traffic and it does close the session . Ciscoworks will just try to logg in when it's ready to do the upgrade .

The reason that tftp traffic does not keep the session up is pretty simple: the tftp traffic is not traffic through the vtp session. The vty session is between your workstation and the virtual port on the router or switch. Commands you enter or other interactions will reset the inactivity timer and keep the session up. The vty session establishes an EXEC session on the router or switch. When you enter the copy tftp command the EXEC process is sending and receiving but not the vty process.

So what that boils down to is that the vty session gets logged off, yes, but it doesn't actually matter. Except you don't get notified in the unlikely event that the TFTP fails.
