I guess I am fundamentally missing something here, but having surfed Cisco's site, I can't figure out how to go about upgrading my IOS. Why the mystery?

It is upgraded like most other cisco routers using TFTP.

Now if your question is where you find the software image you will need a service contract to download software.

Hi
If you are trying to upgrade running router then the command is :
copy tftp flash
And if u are trying to upgrade from the ROMMON then the command is
tftpdnld
In what are u facing prob.

The 1605-R went EoS and software support ended 28 Feb 2006. Below is the information from the EoS documentation.
"The Cisco 1600-R Series is supported in Cisco IOS Software releases through the end of Cisco IOS 12.2T and Cisco IOS 12.3 Mainline"
