I have a client that may have to switch/route based on tcp #. I am looking for what options they have for equipment. Currently they have a 3550-48-smi switch that is serving their purpose. They may need to have the ability to route traffic based on port number with one of their customers, and I was wondering if the 3550 switch will work, or if not, what the other options were.

Policy Routing is what you want. The 3550 can do it, but it needs the EMI software version. See http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps646/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a00801cdf81.html#1260543
