We are planning to expand the local network and looking to add 10G line cards on our WS-6509-E. The confusion is over the types of optic modules that these cards support.
Can anyone advice if these line cards support all these three - namely XENPAK, X2 & SFP Plus?
Thanks

6704 supports XENPAK only.

Hi,
Currently i have c6509 with these modules:
WS-X6516A-GBIC
WS-SUP720-BASE
WS-X6704-10GE
And I want to replace this chassis with c6509E these supervisor either (VS-S720-10G-3C or VS-S720-10G-3CXL)
I have two queries:
WS-X6516A-GBIC
WS-X6704-10GE
Thanks

What is the difference between these supervisor (VS-S720-10G-3C or VS-S720-10G-3CXL)
See the "XL" at the end of the part number? If you get the regular (no "XL"), you'll only get 256k IPv4 routes. The "XL" will allow you up to 1 million IPv4 routes.
Is these modules will work with c6509E and these supervisor (VS-S720-10G-3C or VS-S720-10G-3CXL)
Yes and no. Yes, these supervisor cards will work on the current chassis you've got. But if you plan to use VSS, then your 6704 line card is incompatible with VSS.
Another thing, don't waste your money. Firstly, the price of the Sup720 is exactly the same as the price of the newer (and more powerful) Sup2T supervisor card.
And lastly, rumours has it that the 6500 chassis is in it's "last gasp". Personally, I'm waiting for Cisco to announce the EoS/EoL.
If you want to future-proof your investment, the potential replacement of the venerable 6500E is the 6880-X/6807-X.

You are right. No EoS/EoL announcement has been made as of this date. But an announcement about the future of the 6500E is imminent.
2. if i use 6500E with sup-2t the these modules will work (WS-X6516A-GBIC, WS-X6704-10GE ) am i right ?
Both line cards will not be supported.
VS-S2T-10G-XL VS-S2T-10G
Choose either the plain or the "XL". If you plan to do VSS, then make sure you choose the same.

That is correct. Both cards will not work.
Another thing you need to also consider if you plan to continue going down 6500E chassis. Talk to your authorized Cisco dealer and/or Cisco AM and ask them a theoretical question of how much MORE do you have to pay to purchase maintenance contract on an EoS/EoL chassis. You can use a theoretical model of a 6500 (non "-E").

HI Leo,
i can use this module WS-X6724-SFP instead of WS-X6516A-GBIC with (WS-F6K-DFC4-A or WS-F6K-DFC4-AXL)
and based on what i select (WS-F6K-DFC4-A or WS-F6K-DFC4-AXL) .

Look at this page and scroll down to Table 5. You'll need to replace WS-X6516A-GBIC with WS-X6824-SFP-2T.
In regards to your daughter card and whether or not you should get the "XL" or not, you need to look at your Supervisor Card (Sup2T). If you are getting the XL card then it's recommendable to get the XL variety on your other line card.
