can someone please recommend a terminal emulator with a USB to serial adapter for Windows XP? - hyperterminal is no longer cutting it.

Thanks.

As far as I know the question of USB with serial adapter versus com port is a question of PC hardware and perhaps Operating System. The terminal emulator just uses whichever port you point it at and does not care if it is traditional com port or USB.

But if you are saying that you want something better than Hyperterm then I sympathesize with you. There are a number of emulators available that I think are better than hyperterm. I have been using SecureCRT and have been very happy with it. (http://www.vandyke.com/products/securecrt/index.html).

I have also used TeraTerm and like it a lot. (www.vector.co.jp/authors/VA002416/teraterm.html)

Rick,

Thanks for your reply. My new laptop simply does not have a COM port - it has a USB and the serial port. I have been using TeraTerm and like it a lot, However, it does not an option for a USB port. How do I point a USB port to the traditional com port?

Thanks.

For a list of USB to serial port adapters, check this out:

http://www.everythingusb.com/hardware/USB_Legacy_Converters/USB-to-Serial_Adapters.htm

As for terminal packages, there are tonnes of them out there, one I have used for years is called QVTTerm, I like it because it has the Xwindows cut/paste feature, i.e. highlite, rightclick to copy, rightclick to paste. For QVTTerm, go to http://www.qpc.com/

My $.02--I've had great luck with SecureCRT & Belkin USB to Serial Adapter (F5U409).

But any combination on the above listed links should give you what you are looking for.

Steve, thanks for your reply. The problem I have had is that every terminal emulation software I have looked at does not see a USB port - it sees a serial & a telnet port. Have you had any luck with a terminal emulation software that actually sees a USB port?

Thanks again.

Thanks for your response. With a USB to serial port adapter, a terminal emulator will still recognize only a com port or allowes a telnet session. Do u happen to know a terminal emulator that will see a USB port?

Thanks again.

Absolutely. SecureCRT (and others I'm sure) will keep that portion transparent to you. Remember it's a USB to Serial Converter, what you see on your side is logically a com port. When you set it up, just select one of the Com ports. For me, on my Sony laptop, it used Com 1, but on my coworkers Dell laptop, it used com 5.

Steve,

Thanks for you response. I have tried all 4 com ports on my Thinkpad in conjunction with both Tera Term Pro and the Hyperterminal and still "no cigar". My USB ports seem to be working fine with other devices. The converter I am using is from my Palm that's working OK with the Palm. Just can't make any heads or tails out of this.....
