anyone know why when i install the cisco VPN client the computer its installed on can no longer share files accross the network!

Do you know if "Allow Local LAN Access" is configured on the VPN Server. Please refer the below URL for information on this feature

this is even before i connect to the PIX at my office!
right now i just have the VPN client installed... no connection in there at all! but i can't share files with my other laptops on my network!

Do you have ACLs configure anywhere that would deny access from teh VPN ip pool? Do you have a firewall on the host you are trying to connect to? Can you ping the tunnel gateway?

Check to make sure the Options | Stateful Firewall (Always On) setting is not toggled on in the vpn client settings.
