Sensor Stops Responding When Trying to Update Signatures

I have two IDSM2's. Whenever we try to update signatures using VMS, the sensors stop responding and the signature update is unsuccessful. Today when updating to S100, I recieved an event in the Audit log:

"An error occurred while running the update script on sensor named xxxxx. Detail = The system exec did not complete within the given watchdog timeout (2400 secs)."

When trying to login to the console on the sensor, I get the message "Error: Cannot communicate with the system processes. Please contact your system administrator.)

From this point, I reset the sensor module and try the upgrade again. Usually after a few iterations of this, the update will be successful.

Any ideas on how to correct this problem? Incidentally, I've had this identical issue at other clients of ours with similar configurations.
