I think you mean Outside or public port - external is not exact term
Basicly you have two ports on VPN concentrator - Outside, public (or External) its connected to untrusted world (typically to ISP) and Inside, private (Internal) and its connected to trusted (local) network

Hope that helps rate if it does

some concentrators have more than 2 ports for a 'dmz'. we only use 3005's so i'm not sure what kind of scenario you would have where you would need 3 ports or more.

I think normally they have 1 Private interface E1, 1 Public Interface E2 and 1 External interface (Like MDZ) E3.

Not sure you are right, our Cisco 3015 Concentrator has 3 ports on the back, public, private and external. I am using private for the inside network and public for the outside network.
