I'm currently building a Service Provider network in a virtual lab. I understand the concepts of how SPs route the traffic of their commercial customers (MPLS, VRF, MP-BGP, etc) but I was wondering if anyone could explain or direct me to any info as to how ISPs route residential customers? (Xfinity, Fios, etc).
I began studying networking about 8 months ago and have found these boards to be incredibly helpful. I currently work as an electrician, therefore I do not have a network of friends or colleagues who can offer help me understand certain technologies better. So I would just like to thank everyone who has contributes to these forums!

For Xfinity customers, they have public IPs and their packets are routed "normally".

Hi,
Very good carrier move indeed, but be prepared to learn and educate yourself every day.
Try to search for FTTH solution/GPON/hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) solutions
But the basic idea is the same aggregate customers onto a device which serves as GW for them and does the shaping per subscriber profile, security etc. and then direct customers’ traffic to the right VRF on PEs
Example:
