Estimate Recording Space on VSOM 7.6.0

Hello,

I'm wondering if I can estimate the storage usage of recording camera with continuous looping.

I have VSOM 7.6.0 and let's say I have a Cisco HD 6000P camera. I want the camera to be continuous looping recording for 14 days. The video quality is set as custom.

How can I estimate the recording file size that will be consumed in media server?

Thank you

Approximate Calculation can be done using,

Attached the VSM 7 Vconfigurator for your further reference, use the spread sheet to calculate estimated space.

also,

Bitrate x 86400 x #days (this would give an approximate space required).

Go to VSMC page --> Recordings --> estimated Storage for each camera and add them all.

Hello Raghav,

Thank you for the VSM Configurator.

I also have tried to check storage estimation via VSMC page just like you told me.

But, after I added the all estimated storage and I compared to the storage usage in hardware status, I found mismatch data consumed.

As attached, after I added all estimated storage, I got around 7GB. But at storage usage information in hardware status (as attached), 3.81TB has been used.

1. Estimated Storage is the space required for respective camera depending on the resolution, bit rate and retention period.

2. Storage Usage is the space used meaning data occupied on the disk. if the current storage on the VSMC page is added, it should fairly come up to 3.X TB of data.

When a Camera is added VSM blocks the space on the drive depending on the configuration this is the estimated storage. (from the snap shot each camera has certain estimated size)

when camera start recording, space is consumed / utilized, so current space increases. this is current storage  from the snap shot ie.. storage usage.

if the estimated storage is higher than the total drive space, VSM needs more space and pop's up an error saying over subscribed.

let us know, if you have any more question.

"if the current storage on the VSMC page is added, it should fairly come up to 3.X TB of data." >> So, does it means that 7GB of all estimated storage is added with current storage on VSMC will come up to 3.x TB?

Could you give me an example about relationship between storage usage and estimated storage?

I can attempt to draw the distinction for you.

Storage Usage is the current actual amount of disk space consumed in the media repository.  i.e. - An actual count of the space that has already been consumed for the archive.

Estimated Storage is, well, an estimation or guess at the maximum amount of storage the archive could consume once it's retention goals are met.

For instance, archives with a set loop duration that have been around for longer than their configured retention period should have Usage and Estimate values that are pretty close.

If, however, you just started an archive, the actual usage will be much less than its estimated total.

Sorry if the image looks squished for you in these forums.  You can try right-clicking and opening in a new tab or window and it should render properly.

Cheers!

Hello Scott,

I calculated my Estimated Storage is around 7GB and the Storage Usage on Hardware Information is around 3.81TB. If the estimated storage and Current Storage values will be pretty close, why can the storage usage be around  3.81TB?

Is that true if I sum up all values of  my Storage Estimation will be resulted around 7GB?

eventually it will reach approx. 7GB end of archive retention period.

what is the retention period set on the template? how many days has passed the template been set?

For Example - if the retention period is set to 30 days, now you are running on 5th or 10th day of the archive, i wouldn't have reached the 7GB. 7GB is the space required for total retention days set on the template.

let me know, if you have any questions here?

Hello Raghav,

Okay, I understand that it will reach approx. 7GB end of archive retention period. If I set the retention period to 14 days and if the days has passed 30 days, will it still reach approx. 7GB end of archive retention period? Or will it more than 7GB?

And why does the storage usage become 3.xTB if the end of archive retention period just only 7GB?
