Media Server Logs

I have several servers that have simply shutdown. As a result, I have to travel to the installation and reboot the server. As we have several installations, this "solution" is quickly becoming untenable. Would anyone be able to tell me which log file would contain specific information regarding the nature of this shutdown, based on your experience? I'm finding the manuals really lacking in helpful information.

Has anyone experienced a rash of unexplained shutdowns and found a solution that they would care to share?

I'd take a crack at it:

What servers are we talking about here? CIVS, CPS, UCS? Basic details about build? Multiple PSUs, hardware RAID or single drive?

What actual "state" are they in when you physically visit them? If they are _literally_ powered down, I would suspect faulty hardware.

If they are still physically powered and have any sign of life (status lights, etc...), are there any audible or visual alarms? Is there anything on the console?

Scott,

Please find below the System Summary from "Shutdown Server's" Management Console. This server has a hardware RAID.

Physically, the unit is powered off, but will turn on and boot up when the power button is pressed with no problem. There is a single light showing that the server is on the network, but no other signs of life. There is "no signal" on the display and no alarms at all. This unit had to be powered on every day last week and was ok until it had to be powered on yesterday.

Maybe stating the obvious here, but this has happened to us on some of our 6500's before we realized what was going on. Are the boxes plugged into a UPS? We had two APC 5000 boxes in two separate install sites that were put in at the same time. After some time the units batteries would begin to fail and the UPS would essentially reset its self, run on the batteries until they died, then cut over to line power again. The batteries would recharge and it would happen all over again. The thing was, the UPS never indicated it was having issues. We only found out about it when we were in the closet on an unrelated issue it happened to happen with us standing in front of it.

Thought id throw that out there in case you had not looked at that as being a possibility.

I really appreciate your response Nicholas. This unit is plugged into a UPS, and there was an "issue" with the UPS the other day. Our UPS also, acts funny at times, but doesn't indicate any malfunction. I will see about having this unit replaced.

You are very welcome. I hope this resolves your issues.

Check to see if it has the NIC card installed in the back of the unit. Before this we did not utilize this function but now we do in the hopes that it will at least make us aware of problems before they become critical.
