When we set motion detection up for the four CISCO cameras on the media server the cameras seem to record all the time. Is there a way to have them only record on Motion?

Hello Ruan,
If you go into the Event configuration, specifically the motion detection configuration page where you configure the motion windows, check to see if the status is Active and the window is all highlighted in green. If it is, then it should be recording. It should only be Active when there is motion. You will need to adjust the size of the window and sensitivity appropriately to avoid false positives and false negatives. There is a Best Practices tip in the documentation that states:
"Experiment to determine the optimal camera placement, motion detection window, and sensitivity to avoid false positives (detected motion that is not of interest) and false negatives (motion that is not detected). Have two people available, one to adjust the camera placement and direction, and one to modify settings in VSOM."
If the motion is not Active, but you are still recording all the time, then it perhaps you also have an archive configured (looping or scheduled) that needs to be removed if you only want to record on motion.
Hope this helps,
Sean

Ruan,
When configuring a motion archive, make sure under the Event section you select a feed and not an archive. Selecting an archive marks an existing archive (sets flags) for each motion event. Configuring with a feed will create a motion archive. The difference here is that for motion archives created in this way, a default 1 hour loop archive is created. At the 1 hour and 10 minute mark, the grooming process will look at the first 2x 5 minute .smd files created (we start new files after each 5 minutes of recording.) If either of those 2 files have been flagged as having had a motion event, they will be preserved. If no motion event was logged during that smd file, the file is groomed (deleted.)
I hope that helps.
Jim
