Cisco RV042 - PPPOE configuration and VPN feasibility

sonyscaria

Primary requirements:

1. load balancing / redundancy for internet

2. VPN access to LAN from internet

Sienario

some home ISPs provide PPPoE internet connection terminated to the customer home with an RJ45 ethernet, all we need is to connect to PC port and login to ISP site with username/password to connect the internet. Alternate option is (for more than one user at customer end), connect the RJ45 to wifi router, configure PPPoE username/password on router and the router dials the ISP and the internet connection is always ON.

Question1: Does Rv042 be able to provide the dial in function (can it act as a PPPoE modem)

Question 2: If there is a modem between RV42 and ISP, modem gets the public ip address and RV42 end is private ip (Modem LAN connects to Cisco RV042 WAN). Is it possible to setup vpn in the latter case?

Hello sonyscaria,

The RV042 can act as a PPPoE modem, you can find more information on how to set it up here: http://sbkb.cisco.com/CiscoSB/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=ff4850597c7847c3a98d7bbe60645fe1_Setting_up_RV016_with_DSL_Connection.xml&pid=2&respid=0&snid=4&dispid=0&cpage=search

Regarding your second question, you can get the VPN to work if the modem between the RV042 and the ISP can be configured to do a port forwarding to allow all packets coming on port 500 & 4500 (which are usually used for VPN connections) to reach the RV042, otherwise the modem will drop the packets thus they won't reach the RV042 and the VPN won't be established.

Should you have any other question don't hesitate to let us know, have a great day!
