RV180 VPN connects and allows to browse folders, but drops when opening a file.

Last week we received our 300Mbps fiber connection. We bought the RV180 because of its high throughput, and it handles the speed perfectly.

However when setting up VPN, I run into a strange problem.

Setting up a QuickVpn, or PPTP is straightforward and connecting is no problem. But that is as far as it will go. I can connect with QuickVpn or PPTP and browse a NAS or PC directory structure, but when I try to open a file the VPC connection drops.

I've enable remote management.
I can ping google.com -f -l 1472 without fragmentation, so a WAN MTU of 1500 should be ok.
I've tried disabling firewall attack Preventions.

I've setup the following experiment: Updated the firmware (1.0.2.6), restored factory defaults.

Configured the RV180 as follows:

    IPv4 WAN (Internet)

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

Internet Connection Type: Automatic Configuration - DHCP

DNS Server Source: Get Dynamically for ISP

Router MAC Address: Use Default Address

    IPv4 LAN (Local Network)

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

    Host name: RV180

    IP Address: 192.168.75.1

    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

    DHCP Mode: DHCP Server

    Domain Name: LCDVT

    Starting IP Address: 192.168.75.100

    Ending IP Address: 192.168.75.254

    Lease Time: 24

    DNS Proxy: Enable

    Attack Prevention

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

    WAN (Internet) Security Checks

Respond to Ping on WAN (Internet): Disabled

    Stealth Mode: Disabled

    Flood: Disabled

    LAN (Local Network) Security Checks

    Block UDP Flood: Disabled

    ICSA Settings

    Block Anonymous ICMP Messages: Disabled

    Block Fragmented Packets: Disabled

    Block Multicast Packets: Disabled

    VPN Users

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

    PPTP Server: Enabled

    Starting IP Address: 192.168.75.50

    Ending IP Address: 192.168.75.99

    VPN Client Setting Table:

    ---------------------------

    No: 1

    Enabled: Enabled

    Username: lcdvt

    Password: *********

Allow User to Change Password: NA

    Protocol: PPTP

    Web Access

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

HTTPS Web Access on LAN Interface: Enabled

    Remote Management: Enabled

    Access Type: IP Address Range

    Start of Range: 192.168.75.1

    End of Range: 192.168.75.254

    Port Number: 443

    Remote SNMP: Disabled

The rest of the menu options are factory default, except for the Logging Policies where I've enabled everything.

In this experiment I connect from a remote location, start browsing through disk directories without any problem, and then open a file, after which the VPN connection drops (or some process crashes). After transferring a few 100 KB the VPN connection crashes.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience with small business support.  We are here to help, assist with configuration, and to resolve issues.  If you will send me your case #, I'd be glad to review it, create a new case, or assist you with your device.

We do want to resolve issues, not just close cases.

goulloux

Please call into our support desk, and we'll open a case for your issue.  We definitely want to resolve this issue for you.

Verify you're using the latest firmware, 1.0.3.10

javascript:getImageDetailsListAJAX('&mdfid=284005928&softwareid=282487380&release=1.0.3.10&rellifecycle=&relind=AVAILABLE&reltype=latest');

in looking at the Software release notice,

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/csbr/rv180w/release_notes/rv180w_rn_1-0-3-10.pdf

There is an open issue with quickvpn

CSCue44984

Description —QuickVPN connection becomes inactive and  users cannot connect after five days.

This does not sound like your issue, but

we definitly can troubleshoot the issues you are having, duplicate in the lab, and if we cannot resolve it, escalate your case to engineering to get the issue fixed.

The best way to create a case is to go to Cisco.com, hover over support, click 'open or view cases' .  once you've created the service request, call one of these numbers and choose 'existing case'.  That will bypass the case creation queue.

I did find a bug

CSCuh59194

RV180:G2G VPN tunnel always disconnect when send traffic

which should be resolved in the current firmware.

if you are running he 1.0.3.10 or better, have factory reset the unit, and reconfigured  and it's not fixed, we want to know.  Also the more cases we have from our end users, the more focus and attention this bug will get.

Dan

This product is a complete hoax. Large parts of the specification are lies. I've waited more hours on this router then I would like to know. Just give me your postal address, so I can send it to you. I have no use for this scam product.

For your information, I've bought a Draytek Vigor, and it does everything their specs say it could do, and more.

I will absolutely never buy anything from or based upon Cisco ever again.

I'm sorry you feel that way.

Cisco does stand behind their products.  If you cannot return it to your place of purchase, call in and we will create a case for you and start the process for a refund.  That may take some more of you time unfortunately.

Do you have your previous case # handy?  I would like to review it and see what we could have done better, and feed it back to our engineers.

Dan

Case # 625375345, service engineer Kalina Mihaylova (kmihaylo@cisco.com) I took the afternoon of to explain the problem help her logon to my system perform all kinds of tests, and after I finally send her additional testing information on her request, I found out that the bitch just closed the case!

In response to your reply, I don't find that a satisfactory answer, why don't you people start calling me and give me an address to send this ridiculous product to, so you can investigate an than start apologizing!

I have updated the firmware to 1.0.3.10 my pptp VPN connection is still dropping out when opening or moving files across the VPN. I can connect to the VPN server on the RV180W just fine and browse files but when I try to open or move a larger file the VPN locks up and I have to disconnect and reconnect.
