Last week we received our 300Mbps fiber connection. We bought the RV180 because of its high throughput, and it handles the speed perfectly.
However when setting up VPN, I run into a strange problem.
Setting up a QuickVpn, or PPTP is straightforward and connecting is no problem. But that is as far as it will go. I can connect with QuickVpn or PPTP and browse a NAS or PC directory structure, but when I try to open a file the VPC connection drops.
I've enable remote management.
I can ping google.com -f -l 1472 without fragmentation, so a WAN MTU of 1500 should be ok.
I've tried disabling firewall attack Preventions.
I've setup the following experiment: Updated the firmware (1.0.2.6), restored factory defaults.
Configured the RV180 as follows:
IPv4 WAN (Internet)
------------------------------------------------------------------
Internet Connection Type: Automatic Configuration - DHCP
DNS Server Source: Get Dynamically for ISP
Router MAC Address: Use Default Address
IPv4 LAN (Local Network)
------------------------------------------------------------------
Host name: RV180
IP Address: 192.168.75.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
DHCP Mode: DHCP Server
Domain Name: LCDVT
Starting IP Address: 192.168.75.100
Ending IP Address: 192.168.75.254
Lease Time: 24
DNS Proxy: Enable
Attack Prevention
------------------------------------------------------------------
WAN (Internet) Security Checks
Respond to Ping on WAN (Internet): Disabled
Stealth Mode: Disabled
Flood: Disabled
LAN (Local Network) Security Checks
Block UDP Flood: Disabled
ICSA Settings
Block Anonymous ICMP Messages: Disabled
Block Fragmented Packets: Disabled
Block Multicast Packets: Disabled
VPN Users
------------------------------------------------------------------
PPTP Server: Enabled
Starting IP Address: 192.168.75.50
Ending IP Address: 192.168.75.99
VPN Client Setting Table:
---------------------------
No: 1
Enabled: Enabled
Username: lcdvt
Password: *********
Allow User to Change Password: NA
Protocol: PPTP
Web Access
------------------------------------------------------------------
HTTPS Web Access on LAN Interface: Enabled
Remote Management: Enabled
Access Type: IP Address Range
Start of Range: 192.168.75.1
End of Range: 192.168.75.254
Port Number: 443
Remote SNMP: Disabled
The rest of the menu options are factory default, except for the Logging Policies where I've enabled everything.
In this experiment I connect from a remote location, start browsing through disk directories without any problem, and then open a file, after which the VPN connection drops (or some process crashes). After transferring a few 100 KB the VPN connection crashes.

This time I hard resetted the router with (reset button 20sec). Made similar settings see RV180.cfg Started PPTP from a remote location, and started browsing through a harddisk via the VPN connection. Than I tried to open a file, and the VPN connection drops.

I now also found that passthrough VPN connections often drop. I beginning to believe that the product specifications are a complete scam. How do I go about getting my money back?

Hello Lodewijk,
Thank you for sharing this information with us. I have tried to use the configuration file provided by changing the removed passwords but it seems the file is either corrupt or invalid. Can you please give us a call and provide your Cisco ID (UserID for the Cisco website) and the serial number of the RV180 so we can create a case for you? Please provide also the original exported backup configuration along with the credentials so we can perform some tests in our lab.
The global phone numbers of our support centers can be found here:

Thank you in advance!
Kind regards,
Iwan

I have the same problem. RV180, firmware 1.0.2.6
Have created Ipsec tunnel, and PPTP tunnel. Can browse on PPTP but when trying to open file it will lock up very soon and require a disconnect/reconnect.

I have the same problem. RV180W, firmware 1.0.2.6
In status menu CPU 100%?
From a different WAN address to the RV180W a lot of packetloss (when I try to send some data trough the PPTP connection).
The WAN/LAN speed is very good and stable, but when a PPTP connection is established the RV180W can't keep up to speed.

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! IT SHOULD NOT EVEN BE ON iBOOT.
IT DOES NOT WORK.
IT WILL NOT DO VPN AT ALL.
THE HELPDESK DOESN'T CARE AT ALL!
THEY ASK YOU QUESTIONS, AND WHEN YOU ANSWER THEY CLOSE YOUR CALL
THEY LEAVE YOUR DEVICE IN A MESS!
THIS PRODUCT SHOULD NOT BE ON THE MARKET!
I'M THROWING IT IN THE TRASH, BECAUSE NOT EVEN MY WORST ENEMY SHOULD BE GIVEN THIS HORIBLE DEVICE!
STAY FAR FAR FAR AWAY FROM CISCO!
CISCO GIVE ME MY MONEY BACK!

This doesn't sound good.
If you can't get your money back, send it to me and let me see what I can get it to do. I was considering getting one.

New firmware just released; will test it tonight. Anyone else tested it yet?
07-30-2013 04:21 AM
Tom,
I installed the new software and lost my settings. A restore of the back-up didn't solve the problem. I reset to the factory default settings and reconfigured. And after some tests the smile on my face was gone.
PPTP problem is not solved
CPU still at 100%
Still a lot of errors and warnings

Thanks for the reply. I actually forgot to do the update last night, but I'm glad I did.
Seems this issue still needs a fix, and I wonder why the thread was marked as 'Answered' when it clearly is not.
07-30-2013 04:41 AM
Tom,
My words exactly it is not 'Answered'.
We have a few million euros installed base from Cisco Hardware (Switches and UCS), but i have never seen such a bad response to problems as of the Small Business Routers section. If the new selection for hardware depends on the quality of the RV180(W) routers then the are gone.

The Cisco SMB products are a completely different animal than the 'real' Cisco iron. Don't think the SMB products represent Cisco at all. The products in this entire division used to be a part of Linksys.

Yeah, very strange indeed since it was just my comment that was selected as an 'answer'.

Any news on this matter, I'm facing exactly the same problem. If I stress just a bit too much my vpn connection, it go down.
