WAN/ISP Configuration - Cisco RV220w vs Cisco 2951-SEC/K9

Hi,

We are planning on testing a new ISP provider in our company but we have the following doubt:

This new provider is using a Optical Fiber line (GPON – PT Prime) for this new internet connection and we already have a Cisco RV220W router but they are not sure if that can be used, so they just informed that they a capable router is the Cisco 2951-SEC/K9, that they are selling of course. So our actual doubt is if the Cisco 2951-SEC/K9 can have some “extra” WAN configurations/authentications that are not available in our Cisco RV220W and that can implicate that we cannot use our RV220w router?

Thanks in advance for all the possible help and Best Regards,

DAC,

Yes the RV220W does not have vlan support on it's WAN interface. After Reading your post none of the small business RV model or SA model won't be able to accomplish what you need it too. Think you will have to move up to minimum a ASA5505 router which does allow this functionality( link below will give you an idea of the ASA5505 and features)

Hope this helps,

Hi,

Yes, the Cisco 2951-SEC/K9 of course is enterprise and give the ability to add expansion cards. These units are capable of having fiber directly connected. So guessing this will be end device or terminating equipment.

To use RV220W the fiber has to be terminated to it's end device.

The only way i see the RV220 working is the fiber terminating into a device other than the Cisco 2951-Sec/k9 router. If its not the 2951 then everything else connects the same via Ethernet TCP/IP.

So really it will depend on what that service providers end terminating device really will be.

Hope this helps,

Hi,

Ok, I got some more details about this new connection GPON (Gigabit capable Passive Optical Network):

It will be a 1:1 Dedicated Optical fiber internet connection (30MB Download / 30Mb Upload), where the optical fiber cable will connect to a ONT (Optical Network Terminal) - Huawei Echolife HG861 – and the ONT will connect to our router using a Ethernet cable. We will have a static IP configuration, but they say that we need to have VLAN support with standard IEEE 802.1Q, because from what they say all the untagged (no VLAN ID) traffic will be refused by the operator. From what I checked the RV220W as that VLAN support and that standard in the specs, but I’m not sure how to configure the RV220W to add the requested VLANID to all the traffic, because from what I checked there is no VLAN options on the WAN configuration?

Thanks for the help,
