WRVS4400N v2,firmware 2.0.0.8 not able to connect to PPPoE.

I recently got a WRVS4400N v2, with firmware 2.0.0.8 for home usage. I tried to hook up a direct connection to my ADSL MTS Allstream service provider and setup for PPPoE. Put in the required username/password and it wouldn't connect. I verified the login information with my provider and still no luck.

Preformed the items like basic resets of the box to system defaults, disable items not needed to be on, updated to firmware 2.0.1.3 then back to 2.0.0.8, tried looking for DHCP but not ip and etc with Cisco tech support. My service provider states the modem is already in bridge modem and when connected directly to computer with a PPPoE connection with username/password works.

Below is what I got from the logs:

Dec 31 18:00:49 - Plugin pppoe loaded.
Dec 31 18:00:49 - PPPoE Plugin Initialized

I also did a wireshark screen capture, shown below.

screencap.jpg

Line 57 to 63 shows my new router trying to get the PPPoE connection with no success.

Line 69 to 78 are when I put back my older D-Link router.

Would this mean that I have a bad router or issue with service provider?

Thank you.

Hi Lorne,

Thanks for posting your question. Have you tried cloning the MAC address of the PC that successfully connected? Sometimes the modems will allow certain MAC addresses and not others. After you clone the MAC you may need to reboot the modem.

I have not tried cloning the PC MAC but I did try to clone the router MAC. No change at the time.

I will try again but this time leave the tv/modem box unplugged for much longer, more like 30 mins. The max was 5 mins before.

Lorne,

Thanks for keeping us updated. Do you have a modem/router from your ISP or is it just a modem? Do you know what the LAN IP is? Sometimes if the modem/router has the same LAN IP as the Small Business router it will cause a conflict. Try changing the LAN IP of your WRVS4400N and then reconnect to the modem.

Thank you for the reply.

My ADSL modem is built into my Motorola cable tv box, my TV comes through the modified phone lines in my area.

I think I already tried changing the router lan ip to be 192.168.10.1 - 255 range and my current working router is set to use 192.168.3.1 - 255 range.

Either, when my old router or PC is plugged in the modem I get a assigned 74.x.x.x ip address. If I released and renewed it, the ip address would be different in the same ip range.

What does these line from my original post mean:

Dec 31 18:00:50 - Unexpected packet: Ether addr: 00:11:bc:b9:e4:1a (PPPOE Discovery) PPPoE hdr: ver=0x1 type=0x1 code=0x07 sid=0x0000 length=0x0034 (PADO) PPPoE tag: type=0101 length=0000 (Service name) PPPoE tag: type=0103 length=0004 (Host Uniq) data (bin): d8 27 04

Dec 31 18:00:50 - Connecting PPPoE socket: 00:00:00:00:00:00 0000 0x427d8
Dec 31 18:00:50 - Couldn't get channel number: Transport endpoint is not connected

Thank you.

Also another thing that I noticed when I went to the newest firmware 2.0.1.3, the PPPoE password was alway blank after a reboot. It seemed to not be saving.

Lorne,

I'm not sure what that error means. I found a few references to it by doing a web search and it seems that updating firmware usually fixes the issue. Version 2.0.1.3 is available for the WRVS4400N.

I tried the frimware 2.0.1.3  and cloned the MAC address again with my old router's mac, with no luck.

Does this mean it is  bad router?

Thank you

Lorne,

I haven't seen a persistent issue like this before with one of our routers. They usually work very well with DSL, although quite often it is required to clone the MAC address. I think that it is more likely that there is a compatibility issue between the router and modem. You could of course replace the router as a test, although I think you would have better luck replacing the modem. Please keep us updated.

With further investigation with Cisco Small Business support, we realized that the router is hard coded for Australia “AU”, not North America. I’ll contact who I bought this from and see if we can make arrangements.

Thank you.
