1841 and HWIC-3G-HSPA cellular interface up then reset then down...

radiomean
Level 1
Level 1

I have a 1841 router and I'm trying to setup HWIC-3G-HSPA...

I have written a simple config but when I try to initiate a cellular connection, the cellular interface (Cellular0/0/0) comes up, goes to reset and goes down within a few seconds.

I initiate the connection by pinging 8.8.8.8

This is the output without debug:

girton-test#ping 8.8.8.8
Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 8.8.8.8, timeout is 2 seconds:

*Aug 28 22:20:36.843: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface Cellular0/0/0, changed state to up.
*Aug 28 22:20:43.447: %LINK-5-CHANGED: Interface Cellular0/0/0, changed state to reset.
Success rate is 0 percent (0/5)
girton-test#
*Aug 28 22:20:48.447: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface Cellular0/0/0, changed state to down

This is the output with debug dialer and debug chat:

Any thoughts please? I have been working at the for hours. I have tried several IOS versions so I don't think it is a bug...

I can post the config if you like...

Thanks! Bill

OK, this is the crucial line...

Aug 29 11:13:32.535: Ce0/0/0 CHAP: I CHALLENGE id 1 len 35 from "UMTS_CHAP_SRVR"

I looked for problems with UMTS_CHAP_SRVR and found another post on these forums. The cellular modem behaviour of up-reset-down felt to me like some login failure and someone else had this issue...

The TRICK is to create:

username UMTS_CHAP_SRVR

and the card connects and it WORKS!

Well, I have not seem that this is documented anywhere official...

Oh well...

Hi and thanks.

I am using c1841-adventerprisek9-mz.151-3.T2 and have tried c1841-adventerprisek9-mz.151-4.M and the card is recognised, but behaves as above.

I tried c1841-adventerprisek9-mz.124-24.T6 and - of course - the card is simply not recognised... No cellular interface appears.

It is not the version - maybe I will try another Sim card?

But all the Sim cards I have tried work fine in a USB dongle...

Cheers!

Well, it's not the Sim card - I have tried an active EE Sim and an active 3UK Sim and both produce the above results - failure.

I have two of the HWIC-3G-HSPA cards and both give the same results...

My next step is to try the card in a 1921 router...

Thoughts please?

Hello,

post the full running configuration of your 1841.

OK, I have put the card in my 1921 router, cleared the config and written a minimal config for testing. I get the same error in the 1921 router as in the 1841. I have now posted the minimal config - with no passwords - below, and I show the cellular up/reset/down sequence when I execute "ping 8.8.8.8"

I have to admit that I am stumped...

I have a EHWIC-3G-HSPA+7 card that I am going to try in the 1921 router (it won't work in the 1841 of course) and see what happens with that...

OK, some more info - when I do sh cellular 0/0/0 all I get some cached error info from the modem. Is this of any use?

Also, post the output of:

Hi and thanks... I have made the changes you suggest but the first thing I would say is I can't add dialer-group 1 to cellular 0/0/0 - I get the message
%Remove Dialer Profile Configuration first

I think because you have made the dialer persistent, I now get a continuous stream of cellular 0/0/0 up - reset - down, as I show below:

Is there some auth issue?

OK, this is the crucial line...

Aug 29 11:13:32.535: Ce0/0/0 CHAP: I CHALLENGE id 1 len 35 from "UMTS_CHAP_SRVR"

I looked for problems with UMTS_CHAP_SRVR and found another post on these forums. The cellular modem behaviour of up-reset-down felt to me like some login failure and someone else had this issue...

The TRICK is to create:

username UMTS_CHAP_SRVR

and the card connects and it WORKS!

Well, I have not seem that this is documented anywhere official...

Oh well...

Hello,

good find. For the sake of reference, can you post the final, working config ?

Thanks... I am still working on it but will try to post it in the next few days...

This post is carried over the cellular interface in the router now!

Cheers, Bill

Hi,

I have same problem. did you solve it and if it is,please share your configuration?

Hello,

This is quite an old thread but it seems that the flaps of the interface were caused by an incomplete configuration of the CHAP authentication on the CPE side.

Since your case may be different, and may involve a different username even if the basic issue is the same, can you please post the following?

  • Full configuration
  • Console outputs produced by

    debug ppp negotiation
    debug ppp authentication

These are crucial to assist you.

Thanks!

Best regards,
Peter

Dear Peter,

Thank you for reply. I solved my problem. It was IMEI registration problem. We made it. Now Cellular interface and Tunnel 0 up but still doesnt work. You can find configuration below. I wrote static route, I can ping tunnel IP but  I cant  see  10.2.1.1  IP  on route table and not pinging. Is there any idea ?
