3845-MB dropping pings to its own serial interface.

Good day friends!

I'm having an issue that I can't quite understand. I set up a test lab to get familiar with EIGRP routing. I have a Cisco 3845-MB with 2

VWIC2-2MFT-T1/E1 cards.

sh ip int brief shows UP UP status on all serial ports. I gave it an IP address but I'm having trouble pinging the serial interface IP. It's dropping pings to its own S 1/1/0 interface when pinging from console. I have known good T1 crossover cables 1&2 - 4&5.

Right now it's pinging itself at about 60 -90% success rate... and I can't figure out why it's dropping any packets at all. I have other issues with in the lab as well... but i think this might be my "core" issue.

To make matters even more "weird" I've tried two different VWIC2-2MFT-T1/E1 cards and I drop pings with both of them. :-/

Hi,

In case of Serial and ATM, when you ping the local IP of the interface, packet goes first to the other end and then come back! This is just how they are designed. So, to check the issue, if you don't see any drops locally on the router then try checking the show interface & show controllers e1 counter on the neighboring router. Please do a clear counter before doing anything.

Hi,

Please provide the following information

- Are you pinging 10.29.3.2 from this router or you're pinging something else?

- paste the output of the following before and after ping:

     - show interface serial 1/1/0:0

     - show controller t1 1/1/0:0

- Try pinging the other side of the link? what's the result?

I'm consoled into the 3845 and trying to the ping the IP that I assigned to int s 1/1/0:0 which is 10.3.29.2. It sometimes pings with packet loss and something doesn't ping at all. I can ping the other side of the link successfully with no packet loss.

Hi,

In case of Serial and ATM, when you ping the local IP of the interface, packet goes first to the other end and then come back! This is just how they are designed. So, to check the issue, if you don't see any drops locally on the router then try checking the show interface & show controllers e1 counter on the neighboring router. Please do a clear counter before doing anything.

UPDATE:

I enabled encapsulation PPP on all serial interfaces in the test lab and now I'm not dropping any pings to any of them.
