4331 router + ES2-4 connection conundrum

We have a new 4331 router and a NIM ES2-4 module.

At first we couldn't see the module properly, and ended up installing the newest IOS so that the module could be seen.

After this I am able to see the ports for the module when doing a show run from the router.  They seem to act properly ( ie i can set switchport attributes to the switch ports ).  I'm struggling to comprehend how I pass traffic between the modules.

For a 2921 we have, there is a router port that we set an IP for, and that allows us to use : service-module to connect to the "switch" config area. This is fairly straight-forward.

On the 4331, there is the command:  hw-module, but when I try to connect to the sublot, i never get a prompt.  It sits at Terminal ready.

I can break out.

Since I am able to configure the switch ports without having to connect to the "switch", my gut says that I don't need to connect to the module at all.

Can someone help me fiugre out how / or which interface to configure, so the switch module talks to a router port?

Recently, a fellow sysAdmin was let go, and he of course had the majority of the Cisco experience.  I do have a CCNA (RS), but its a new product, and I'm still getting my feet wet.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

I'm having a very difficult time posting.  Mollom keeps catching a sentence, that it thinks is spam.

This router serves the ultimate goal of being our perimeter router at the datacenter.  The connection to the provider will be plugged in on the router side, and our Palo Alto firewalls (in HA mode) will both plug into the switch module, so that when failover occurs, there is not interruption. ( and no need to configure each PA with a separate IP on the router.

When i want to add NIM-ES2-4 Interface Card in the ISR4431/K9 Router in CCW, the Error is showing 'A selection of SSD is required when NIM-SSD is selected.' is it necessary to add NIM-SSD when selecting NIM-ES2-4. ? Can i just add NIM-ES2-4 as spare (ignoring the NIM-SSD Selection) ? Urgent Suggestion Required.
