I have a 7204VXR with 1000base-sx gbic in it. Will this handle only multi mode patch cords or will it run ok with a single mode patch cord? What will happen if I use a single mode patch cord? I only need to cover about 10feet and the other device requires single mode.

Based on experience, it Sorta kinda works sometimes, you would susceptable to more link layer errors. Short answer is I wouldn't do it.

Thre is an NPE dependency involved. table 11 in the link listed below gives the various gbics by router/processor.
