the switch need ip-connectivity to the internet
- configure an ip-address on the uplink ( manually or using DHCP)
- configure dns resolving (manually or DHCP)
if "ping software.cisco.com" gets an reply you are good to go
if "ping 8.8.8.8" works but "ping software.cisco.com" not, your dns resolving does not work
if both don't work then your tcp/ip configuration is not correct or your ISP blocks some traffic
if the switch came right out of the box it will be configured for dhcp
