ASA 5512 as a router for temporary solution

                   Hello Cisco family!

I am about to fly out to Kiev and open an office. Some of our equipment will not be available until the 15th of July.  Of course, the biggest piece is our router.  So my question is:  Can I use an ASA 5512 as a router and firewall? I can't remember, but I think I did this years ago with an ASA 5505.  The circuit will be DIA and a VPN connection will be setup from Kiev to Dallas.  Hopefully, you can point me in the right direction.  Once the router makes it in, I will be very happy.

It will look like this:

Kiev  ASA 5512 ---> the internet ---> (Dallas office)  router ---> firewall

Thanks,

Scott

To give you a really good answer we would need to know what the new network would look like and what functionality you expect from it. What functions would the router be providing that you want the ASA to provide?

If you are expecting quite basic functionality of provide default gateway for end stations connected inside so that they can access remote resources then the ASA should do that pretty well.

Hi Scott ,
Yes you can. Nonetheless keep in mind for this month or so all the functionalities and feature you need to keep in this new implementation.

I think the foremost questions in my mind would be:

1. What media type is the internet circuit terminated on?

2. What routing protocols does the service provider expect to run with us (if any)?

3. Do we require support for multiple VLANs?

Regarding question 1 - if the circuit is terminated on ethernet you would be good to go - if it is terminated on fibre you may need an add on module. If it is terminated on something other than that you may be out of luck.
