ASR to DWDM

Howdy folks,

It has been some time since iv worked with a DWDM and one question has been hunting me abit. I was wondering: i currenlty have the following topology: (Switch) >> (ASR) >> (DWDM) >> (PE). Do i need to use a special SFP between the ASR and the DWDM and the DWDM and the PE?

From my expriance at data centers we used to work with DWDM and Dark Fiber. In these cases we used to have special SFP which operated on different lenghtwave frequenties.

Now we are not using dark fiber, just a dwmd to connect our CE to the PE. Do we need a special sfp here? If so or if not what SFP can we use? And to complete the picture for me, will the provider use a special sfp between the DWDM and their PE?

Thanks!

It depends on what you mean by "(DWDM)" in between the ASR and PE.

There are DWDM optics that you can plug directly into a device port.  It could use a dark fiber to the other device (also with DWDM optics), or there may be a DWDM infrastructure between the two devices.  If there's a DWDM infrastructure, the two device optics might be on different channels.  Also if the latter, it's also possible you would connect to the the edge of a DWDM infrastructure with "ordinary" optics or even copper.

BTW, there's a forum devoted to Optical Networking.
