ASR1001 RP1 capacity BGP full-mesh

Hello,

My question is about the ability of the ASR1001 to be able to manage the full-routes (V4/V6) learned by R1 and R3...

R2 = ASR1001 RP1 with 8Gb DRAM

Will the use of ASR1001 in iBGP sessions with R1 and R3 be possible ?

 Do you think the ASR1001 will be usable and the FIB will not be full ?

The rule of thumb is that a full BGP routing table requires around 1GB of memory. So even with 4GB, you should be okay...

8GB should be plenty to hold the entire BGP IPv4 and IPv6 routing tables. That said, the IPv6 is growing a lot faster than than the IPv4 table, so kee an eye on future growth. Below an excerpt from the attached data sheet:

 

Performance

● Scalability up to 1,000,000 IPv4 routes or 500,000 IPv6 routes
● BGP RR Scalability up to 5,000,000 IPv4 routes or 3,000,000 IPv6 routes

Yes the table is increasing rapidly !!

By rounding I have 820000 IPv4 and 91000 IPv6 routes. The total of V4 and V6 routes is 911 000.

So it must be able to work on the 1001 since it supports 1,000,000 routes.

 

The link does not indicate the number of routes with 8Gb DRAM in RP1 model... Only for 4Gb.

For the RP2 this is indicated in 8 and 16Gb DRAM.

The rule of thumb is that a full BGP routing table requires around 1GB of memory. So even with 4GB, you should be okay...
