Writing a configuration should never, ever, cause a device to reload. The most probable cause is a bug in the operating system. Have you tried upgrading the operating system on the device? Also, is it perhaps possible that the amount of RAM in the device is exhausted? Do any logging messages appear on the console before the system is reloaded? Usually a cause of the reload is logged that could help us or the Cisco TAC to narrow down the problem.
