How are the two switches connected? Is it a port channel with multiple interfaces? If your doing layer 2 only, do you have STP configured? Also to note, Hardware guide for the 2960s states the following for the Port LEDs:
Though there can be other issues as well. There has to be some sort of configuration. Are you saying your two switches are at factory default? Then how is the configuration between the two switches? Please post your config files if possible.

Hello
How are the switches interconnected - trunk or access port, if the later make sure stp portfast is enabled?
Check/change the cabling
Can you post the configuration also?

Hello
As all these devices are in the same default vlan then all interfaces as subject to broadcast traffic - so it could be the reason why your experiencing the disconnects.
Anyhow can you post the interface statistics please?
show interface x/x

Hello,

Have you tried setting switch 1 as the root ?

Hello,
try and set the Switch 1 to be the root for Vlan 1:
Switch1(config)#spanning-tree vlan 1 root 1
