BGP Local pref with Route-map

Wassim Aouadi

hi,

In CBT Nuggets, Jeremy says that, if we do not specify a permit statement at the end of the route-map, all unmatched routes will be discarded.

However, in Cisco IOS Cookbook, I read that even if we do not specify a permit statement at the end, all routes will submit to the standard routing process.

Any clarification?

hello Wassim,

my understanding is the following:

when an empty final permit statement is needed or not depends on the route-map usage:

-if the route-map is used to perform route filtering and manipulation all unmatched prefixes will be discarded: not sent to a BGP neighbor or not considered in protocol redistribution.

- if the route-map is used for PBR packets not matching any route-map block will be not discarded but routed normally using standard unicast destination based routing

Hope to help
