Brief regarding Tracert

Hi Expert,

Can anyone explain me brief about tracert. I know if we trace any ip it shows hop by hop information to reach that ip. But why it shows three values , also what is meaning of  * .

1    17 ms     1 ms     1 ms
2     1 ms     *        1 ms
3     7 ms     *        7 ms
4     7 ms     7 ms     7 ms
5     8 ms     8 ms     9 ms
6     9 ms     8 ms     8 ms
7     9 ms     8 ms     8 ms
8    44 ms    42 ms    44 ms
9    35 ms    35 ms    34 ms
10   102 ms   107 ms   102 ms
11   101 ms   100 ms   100 ms
12   107 ms   106 ms   106 ms
