hello experts,

I am facing a simple but annoying problem.....

After I changed customer router to CISCO 2911 from H3C firewall, the WAN interface can not ping its gateway after about 10 minites, I do not know why.

it works well before I change the device.....

here is some logs without real public IP address, could you please help me to have a look.....

thanks in advance.....

Yu.

Hi Yu,

I am just curious why do you have speed 100 on your GigabitEthernet interface instead of speed 1000?

And can I kindly ask you, If you are sure that the gateway you are pinging knows the route back to the 2911-5? The thing is, that you are doing ping but with no source address specified - maybe you are pinging with source address unknown to the gateway - just basic IP connectivity problem. That's all that came to my mind.

Just if you could try the ping 180.166.24.21 source x.x.x.x where x.x.x.x is some known address for the gateway ( it is present in the gateway routing table )

Best regards,

Jan

there is no need for update source - source address is IP address of outgoing interface and IP addresses are on same subnet 180.166.24.20/30.

speed 100 looks suspicious cause it is gigabit interface, what is configuration of interface on the other side?

Also next time try clear ip arp 180.166.24.21 instead shut/ no shut, maybe it will help.

Best Regards Please rate all helpful posts and close solved questions

thanks for your strongly support,

'speed auto' is also can not work, can not work means when I connect the WAN line directly to the router g0/1 with ip address 180.166.24.22 in the router WAN interface, and there is an ip address 180.166.24.21 in the telo side as the GW for the router to connect to the Internet. When the interface is up, everything works well(inside users can surf Internet), but in about 10 minites later, everything does not work(WAN interface g0/1 can not ping directly connected, inside users can not surf Internet)

clear ip arp 180.166.24.21

it is works, but in about 10 minites later, failed again. need to clear ip arp again...........

here is some logs..

Hi,

I'm not sure if I understand you problem description 100%.

Are you saying:

After replacing some device with a Cisco router ("stealing" the IP address from the old device) it takes up to 10 minutes to get Ping replies from its default GW?

If yes, it might be an ARP cache problem on the GW I guess. The GW keeps the old device MAC address in its ARP cache and based on its OS it takes some time to refresh the ARP entry (ARP cache timer is 4 hours by default on Cisco devices).

HTH,

Milan

thanks Milan,

yes, "stealing" the ip address from the old H3C device, and can just ping in first 5 or 10 minutes, after that time the router can not ping directly connected WAN ip address.

10 hours have passed, the ARP should be refresh.....but now it is also can not ping directly connected WAN ip address after a while....

Doesn't look like an ARP issue. Looks like packet loss to me, can you verify the cable is good? Does the problem persist if you plug a machine in, replacing the router?

Sent from Cisco Technical Support iPhone App

thanks Dyer,

I changed a port from g0/1 to g0/2, the problem existed too.

it is ok when using H3C before change to cisco router, and there is no other replace cisco router.

thanks.

That is still an insane amount of packet loss. Can you temporarily connect the H3C again and see if the problem goes away?

I've never worked with an H3C before -- would it be possible to check the MTU on it's 'WAN' interface?

Also, are you seeing that kind of packet loss just pinging the gateway?

hello Dyer,

thanks for your kindly reply,

it is a total packet loss.....I even do not thinks the router send a packet out, because when I to trace the ping status using debug ip icmp command while ping failed, I can not see any debug logs in the console terminal....

I will try to connect back to H3C firewall later for a test,

if it is a MTU problem, I do not know why it can works well for a while, it should does not work at all the time...

hello all,

thanks for all your help

it is a ARP timeout problem and it have been fixed, thanks.

Yu.

Hi Oracat,

I am also facing the same issue.

I just checked the default arp timeout under interface and it's default 4 hrs.

Curious to know how much duration have you mentioned for arp timeout?

What was the arp time out value when you were facing the issue

Thanks
