Cisco 1812 can not initialize ddr sdram. rommon stopped.

Hi, i am new here, and i am new to cisco routing and switching.

I am actually doing a IT Specialist training and we are learning routing and switching with cisco products.

I already got a cisco router from a friend and want to use it for my training.

I dont have a console cable, so i take my cisco 1812 to school and tried to configure it.

First it was booting in rommon. As i already know withot the console cable i can read it from the sys led it is blinking, so there

is some trouble with the IOS. i started in rommon. then i boot the IOS through the rommon and read out the running config file.

Everything was fine. I asked my teacher to solve the rommon boot problem. He tried to configure something in the rommon.

As i remember we changed the boot mode to number 2 and changed the rommon from readonly to upgrade mode.

After configuration ended, the configuration menue started again, and while in this mode he turned off and on the device.

Now my router led all stay green and i got the message "Can not initialize ddr sdram. rommon stopped"

I just have the included 128 MB RAM and dont use the extra DIMM for more ram.

I tried to use the CTRL+BREAK, the special command break from putty.

I recognized that following message comes, at the same moment i turn power on. at the same second:

Can not initialize DDR SDRAM. rommon stopped.

Is it possible that he destroyed the rom? is there any way to restore to default without console, maybe with jumpers?

I am sorry for the long story. but that´s all what happened and i want to tell it.

Thanks for the patience while reading.

Hello,

no extra DRAM indeed, so there is nothing to reseat, sorry about that.

Is it an option to go back to your 'teacher' and ask him what exactly he did ? Since your router was getting into ROMMON before his intervention, maybe he can get the state of the device back to where it was ?

 - There's a fatal hardware problem with the memory of  the device.

Thanks for your reply.

I thought there is a incorrectable mistake in the rom because of the action of my teacher.

this never happend before he did this. i often start the router and got a blinking sys led.

i was able to go into the IOS before his action and also i got the message of how much ram is used. i also can see the run conf

maybe a power circuit destruction to the hardware? is it possible he destroyed my hardware?

so i can throw my router away

Hello,

the router has no warranty anymore, open the chassis and reseat the DRAM (it is pretty easy to find).

Hi George, thanks for your reply.

i had the same thought to reset the dram or reset the rommon.

I just found a jumper to reset the baud and  a jumper j15.

i really don´t know how to do this. but i am pretty shure the hardware is still working.

can you tell me how to rest the dram?

thanks

Hello,

the router has a top section that is attached with I think 4 screws. You can take the top off, what you are left with is what looks like a motherboard.

The DRAM looks similar to what you see in the attached image. Remove it and put it back into the slots(s).

Hi Georg,

i thought i can reset it with some jumpers. Like the old Mainboards got a clear cmos jumper.

But i cant identify the jumper settings and i didn´t find something relative in the manuals.

I don´t have a sdram in the inside. I got a included RAM of 128 MB, which was working while i boot up from rommon to the IOS.

I posted a picture of the mainboard of my router. The empty dimm just means i don´t upgrade my included RAM.

I´ve tried everything so i think i can throw my router away. Thanks for your comments and your help.

I am still trying to solve the problem but my teacher can´t really help me.
