I am proposing for a customer to buy a Cisco 1841 with Advanced IOS with 2 WIC cards, one for SDSL main pipe and a second WIC card for ADSL backup. I would like them to load balance in normal use and switch over to either if one fails. Is this possible and whats the best way of doing it? Static routes?

I would suggest static default routes as the best way to achieve load balancing (only outbound).

Would static routes allow me to load balance or just failover? With an equal metric do they load balance?

Am i gaining anything using and 1841 with ADSL & SDSL WICs against a 1803 with SDSL int and external DSL modem? The cost differnce is significant.

Hi,
two static routes will automatically load-balance. You could use them in primary / backup mode by changing the administrative distance of one of the two static routes.
The 1803 is an option as long as you do not need a FE interface for your LAN. In that case, you can load balance - again with static routes - over the SDSL and Ethernet interface.

Does anyone knows the configuration using 2nd FE interface for SHDSL?
