Hello, I am a teacher for a highschool IT class we primarilly use Cisco 2600 series routers (2610, 2620 etc) one of the labs to introduce OSPF I was planning would be configuration on the interfaces via the ip ospf (Process-id) area () command. However it does not seem to work on these routers. Are they simply too old or am I missing a config step.
Thanks for the help.

do two steps here
1- ip routing
2- router ospf xxx
then try add ospf under interface
interface x/x
ip ospf xxx area yyy

Yes, that command was added in later IOS versions. Likely, correct, your IOS version is too old. Further, also likely even the newest IOS for those routers doesn't support the command either.

BTW, I recall (?), the command you're asking about was provided concurrently, or soon there after, when Cisco routers started to support OSPFv3 for IPv6.
