Hello Team,

Any idea why my OC3 interface is showing increasing output drops its starts happening as soon traffic exceed 60Mbps   ( FYI my traffic never exceeded 75Mbps MAX, and circuit is 150Mbps from carrier , full OC3)

Any thoughts how i can fix this? Below are few stats as starter.

IOS i am using is c7200p-is-mz.122-31.SB10.bin

the show interface switching command doesnt seem to be recognized in my IOS.

HAMP7204VXR#sh interfaces pos1/1 swi?

% Unrecognized command

HAMP7204VXR#sh int swi

HAMP7204VXR#sh int swi?

% Unrecognized command

Just type show interface x/y switching and include the command.

Also include show interface and show running interface, for the interface where packets are input first.

How do you know your traffic never exceeds 75 Mbps, especially down at millisecond intervals?

Assuming you have transient burst congestion, try setting your queue depth to support about 1/2 BDP (bandwidth delay product).  (I suspect the default 40 is too shallow.)

That is right, 40 can be too little for OC3.

Note that when doign calculation on Internet routers, one cannot know the delay, because they talk to all the world.

Agreed, but you could either calculate based on where most traffic goes or calculate for worst case, perhaps 250 ms for the latter.

So should i change my queue setting to 80?

if yes will below command be correct?

int pos1/1

  hold-queue 80

or i need to change my queueing strategey from FIFO to RED?

which one to try frist? Since its production router, and making a single change need lots of approvals process:-s

What is you input interface, gigabit? If so you can increase hold-queue to 100 or 200 wothjout any problem.

Yes there are 3 Giga and 1 Fast interface, and any one could be Input side ,  OC3 is on MPLS side and connecting to carrier.

i will try 100 and lets hope it makes improvement. will keep you updated.

(Just FYI, Carrier end router is Juniper, and they just updated me they are planning to move my circuit over to Cisco on their end as well, Not sure if it will make any difference, but i will definitely update output of both activities and keep you guys posted)

I advise against using (W)RED unless you understand how to tune it, especially as Cisco defaults aren't often optimal.

Would suggest increasing queue depth first.  As Paolo suggests, 100 or 200 shouldn't be a problem; or even larger.

For example, assuming 150 Mbps with 100 ms latency and 1500 sized packets, BDP would be 1,250 packets for the queue.  I suggested 1/2 BDP, so up to about 600 might be considered.

PS:

Unlikely you'll see a difference if other side is Cisco vs. Juniper equipment.

Above Gi0/1 information is my LAN side of the router, so you mean they is so much traffic entring the router from LAN ?

note: POS1/1 is my WAN side.

so i need two WAN circuits? if so then what is the benefit of having OC3 card/ circuit on 7204 which is half utilized?
