Hello All,
Need your urgent help. I have a Cisco1002-X router installed in the rack. It is yet to go live in the network. I just now realized that there is an additional 8Gb RAM shipped with the router, that needs to be installed in it. As, I understand this component is a field upgradable component, so I need not un-install or open the router, but I am confused which slot to be use to install additional RAM in the router.
Please help urgently.
Thanks in advance.

Hello Vikas,
without opening the router is not possible to install an HW component like an 8 GB RAM chip.
It is likely additional memory for the route processor see here:

HW installation guide:

You need to power off and to open your router so you need a maintenance window to do it.
Ask for a maintenance window

Hello Giuseppe
Just want to understand, when we say it is field upgradable, what does that mean?

Hello Vikas,
field upgradable means that you can perform the upgrade on site on the router but does not mean on the fly with the router powered on and running.
You need to power off the router and then to remove the Route processor line card using appropriate levers or skewdrivers then you can install the 8 GB RAM chip on RP module and you then mount the RP linecard again in the router.
Hope to help

Got it... Thanks.
Just one last thing on this.. I read on Cisco website:
"When shipped with 8-GB DRAM (M-ASR1002X-8 GB), 4 slots are filled with 2 GB each"
So, ideally would this have been shipped with the RAM installed already in the router, or it normally is shipped separately.

Vikas

Hello Vikas,
according to ASR1000 ordering guide ASR1002X is equipped with 4GB of RAM that can be expanded to 16GB.
see
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/routers/asr-1000-series-aggregation-services-routers/guide-c07-731639.html#_Toc426706541
Of course if your router has already 8 GB of RAM adding other 8 GB of RAM is possible and gives the maximum of supported memory.
Hope to help
Giuseppe
