Config a 1841 as an internet router

Okay, I need some help shaking the dust loose.

I have a new 1841 with a WIC-T1 that I need to setup for our dedicated internet access. I have been given our ip address network and subnet mask but nothing as far as what address to assign the serial port or any DNS information.

Connected to the ethernet 0/0 I will have a sonicwall firewall that I would like to assign one of our public addresses to. I have the firewall config down and I know I need to get the dns info from our ISP for the firewall but what actually gets the routing going?

I take the first usable address on my subnet and assign it to the eth 0/0 and then assign the second to the firewalls WAN port. I tell the firewall that the Ciscos eth 0/0 is our gateway ... and I am lost from here.

Any help would be appreciated, this board has been a G-d send thus far.

Hi

Oh sorry, I overlooked that line.I thought you are through with the internet and wanted solution.

Yes you will need to configure serial interface. The basic parameters needed to be configured are

(1)IP address on serial

(2)Encapsulation on serial

(3)NO shutdown of serial interface

(4)default route " 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0

As per the DNS,You may configure that into ur firewall.

Hi

An idle setup recommended will be:

-------

There will be a live IP on your router ethernet and firewall_WAN.Your firewall_LAn will have private ip pool which will be NATED through the WAN IP,i.e, your whole network will go outside from that single IP.

Now you can manage your network. You may:

1)block unwanted data transfers like torrents etc using port filtering

2)allow specific applications like browsing, mail only to users.etc.

The usage depends on you.

Check out this link for more details.Instead of your Sonic, its for Cisco PIX,which are the among the best firewalls available.

Thanks JD.

Am I off in my thinking that I need to configure an address on the serial interface or that I need to configure my ISPs DNS servers on the Cisco?

Hi,

On your serial interfcae there will be another IP given by your ISP which will be diffrent from the router's lan port. If you want you can also put DNS servers IP from your ISP. Then you will point a default route on your router towards the ISP, this is what they generally allow.

HTH, Please rate if it does.
