Confirmation of free space on cisco router before ios upgrade

Hello Expert,

We are considering upgrading our 3945 router ios to 15.4(T), I am unsure how to verify the router's flash free space.

Could you provide some guidance.

Hello, 

It looks like the router has the default 256Mb of flash of which about 60Mb has been used and there is close to 199 Mb available.

It never is exact when you add it up, but the "199704576 bytes available (60469248 bytes used)" from the "dir flash" output shows this.

Also, the full post of "sh ver" shoulod have a line about ATA System CompactFlash which provide some additional info.

You have 256Mb of flash:

254464K bytes of ATA System CompactFlash 0 (Read/Write)

and according to the previous output, you have about 199Mb of available space for the new IOS.

I checked, the latest 15.4.2T4(ED) release is about 95Mb.

So you have enough space to load a second IOS.

Just in case, to configure the router to boot the new IOS use the following config:

boot system flash:c3900-universalk9-mz.SPA.154-2.T4.bin
boot system flash:c3900-universalk9-mz.SPA.150-1.M3.bin
boot system flash:
!

This way it should boot to the new IOS, but if something fails, it will then boot off the original, and the last statement just says, find any IOS in flash and use that.

Be very careful when using the "T" train.  "T" train is well known to be very unstable.
