Convert Multicast to Unicast?

KGrev

Hi, Is there a way a 9500 rendezvous point can take the feed from a multicast group and force it to a unicast stream to a specific ip?

Thanks for any help.

If there is way then that good

If not then use gre tunnel make multicast pass over gre tunnel.

You want to change multicast L2 and L3 addresses to unicast L2 and L3?

If so, might I ask why?

Im trying to somehow push a multicast video feed to an anyconnect laptop in
our system.

Hmm, I'm unaware of any feature, inherently part of a Cisco router or switch that would do that.

My expectation would the the client system's VPN package would need to support multicast across the VPN or the client's app has someway to get the equivalent multicast stream via some unicast server.

Consider, in theory, I could have a server accept the multicast stream and convert it to unicast, but how would it know who wants the multicast stream without some communication from the requesting clients?

As an example, years ago, the company I was working at implemented Cisco's IPTV (with 3rd party enhancement - which provided layers of IPTV servers) using both multicast and unicast.  Clients running on LAN would pull a multicast stream.  Clients using VPN would pull a unicast stream.  It was the software, on both server and client, that supported this.

Hi @KGrev ,

You might want to check the Multicast Service Reflection feature. I know it was possible to use this feature in the past to do convert a multicast stream in a unicast and vice versa.

Neat!

Didn't mention it, but I was thinking, if only something like NAT. . .

Very much looks like just what OP might be able to use.

Just wondering about it only mentions being supported in/on 12.2(33)SXI412.4(4)T, but since the document was last updated 6/2010, I hope it's still offered and offered on multiple platforms/IOSs.

@Harold RitterI'm not sure that I can implement this feature on my Cisco 9500 as I don't have the ability to configure "interface Vif1". Does it have to have this style interface to work?

Hi @KGrev ,

I quickly checked and it looks like this feature is supported on the C9500. Here's the documentation for it.

@Harold RitterIm on Version 17.6.5 CAT9K. I'm not seeing a Vif interface?

Hi @KGrev ,

I quickly checked the Cisco Feature Navigator and it appears that the Multicast Service Reflection feature is not available on the Cat9500 platform.
