Error when I click on router and switch

I am an IT student and I'm using network packet tracer; I am trying to set up a simple network with just a router, switch, laptop and pc. when I click on the router and switch to configure them. It pulls up an error for both saying. "All useable tabs are hidden or locked away by design in this power state. Dialog will remain closed". I've just started using this program. Don't really know how to navigate it just yet, but it didn't do this when I first started using the program and did this project. I have them wired up correctly, my laptop and pc are configured but the issue still persists.

this must be a PT activity file; not your own, right?  I can create PT activity lab (which is locked and limited with my password) with some features disabled or hidden for students to use file as an exercise and to test their knowledge.  This type of PT file is not regular lab which is open to add, remove or edit all device.
