About ASR1K Routers:

ASR1k is the Next-generation of Midrange router family 2.5 / 5 / 10 / 20+ Gbps forwarding with services Simple scale: 10-20-(40G) just by changing ESP

[5G-10G in 2RU and 2.5G in 2RU-fixed] Dual AC or DC power supplies

Differentiators:

Designed for High Availability. Hardware redundancy for 6RU (RP and ESP) with ISSU. Software redundancy for 1RU/2RU/4RU: In-service software upgrade, even with one RP State of the art QoS (3 level, 128K+ queues) Integrated services, software-licensed based features (SBC, FW, NBAR, etc.) Powerful control plane in RP -Route Reflector apps

Simple Migration:

SPA support - same interfaces as 7600/12K/CRS-1 IOS features, CLI - simple migration from existing 7200 deployments

Initial target applications:

Broadband (IPTV, Triple Play), IPSec Termination, High-speed CPE/Managed Svcs BGP Route Reflector

Here's a condensed summary of the event.

I am looking for a base router for Core Routing  running only OSPF.  I would like to be able to handle 200 Mbps  and  about 1000 users.  It should scale to 400 Mbps and about 5000 users. No firewall or VPN.  What parts would I need for this ASR1000?

The forwarding ASIC, ESP, determines the scaling factor. ESP20 should fit the bill. If you are looking for hardware redundancy as well, ASR1006, ASR1013 should do with ESP20.

May I use ASR 1000 like vpls routers? Can you please talk about licensing policy for this service?

The ASR1k team is planning to support VPLS in IOS-XE 3.6S (March 2012). ASR1k products are honor based, except ASR1001, which needs license activation - think of it like Cisco's ISRG2 routers running universalk9 images.

What license/software would I need to support OSPF as a minimum and eBGP in addition?

It's better to to stay on any IOS-XE train from 15.0(1)S. The old ones, up to 12.2(33)XNF releases are end of software engineering. You don't need any license as long as you choose anything other than ASR1001.

When I disable fast switching on interface configuring "no ip route-cahe", ip cef is  also disabled for that interface.  Is this a normal behavior for ASR1K?

Fast switching is quite old now. For ASR1k they don't exist and CEF can't be disabled on ASR1k. If you attempt, you would see a message informing the same.

How many rsvp tunnels  can asr with RP2 support at the same time?

It’s a brief answer, but I put this way: ASR1000/RP
MPLS TE Headend: 1k
MPLS TE Midpoints: 15k
MPLS TE Tailends: 1k (ideally)

What are the major components of Cisco ASR 1000 Series?

The major components are: The Route processor RP, forwarding processor ESP and SIP - which houses SPA's.

What does “port status: secure down” mean? How do I change it so it says secure up?

You are talking about L2 port security feature - not ASR1k specific.   It’s a feature for MAC address control and adds up to a security control on who connects to the switch's access/trunk port. "Secure-down" is a default state when port security is not enabled (how to enable: "witchport port-security" on interface sub configuration mode). More details: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps5023/products_configuration_example09186a00807c4101.shtml.

Here are other important questions that our guest thought should be included in this archive but were not discussed during the event due to lack of time.

What is the command to see the rommon version running on ASR1k and FRU status?

"show platform", this show command will let us know the operation status
of the FRU's and rommon version.

We know ASR1k is a hardware based architecture. How can one see drops due to
forwarding asic?

"show platform hardware qfp active statistics drop | e _0_.*_0_" will do the trick..

How do we see FRU's with different ASR1k products?

Please see “Removing and Replacing Cisco ASR 1000 Series Routers Field-ReplaceableUnits” section in this document. [Login Required]

Why is lsmpi_io always very low? Should I be suspecting a leak?

LSMPI (Linux Shared Memory Punt Interface) memory pool is being used to transfer packets/messages from the forwarding processor to the route processor. This memory pool is carved at router initialization into pre-allocated buffers, as opposed to the Processor pool where IOSXE can allocate memory blocks dynamically. It is therefore expected to see this low amount of free memory in lsmpi_io. In fact, it would be more of a concern to see a large amount of free memory for that pool as it would mean IOSXE wasn't able to allocate that memory. See this article for more information. https://supportforums.cisco.com/docs/DOC-16425

Is Arp a pak priority one with IOS-XE image on ASR1k?

It’s not enabled by default but, you can enable it with: Router(config-if)#arp packet-priority enable

Please list the various supported SFP's on ASR1k?

Please refer to this excellent article to get a complete overview. http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/interfaces_modules/shared_port_adapters/configuration/ASR1000/ASRintsw.html

Does ASR1k support per packet load-sharing?

No, unfortunately not..

I would like to better understand how to work with ASR1k' memory. Do you have documentation?

Please take a look at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps9343/products_tech_note09186a0080af252a.shtml

What’s the best way to troubleshoot packet drops on ASR1k?

Please refer to the instructions on http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps9343/products_tech_note09186a0080af2d14.shtml

Where can I find more information on ASR1000’s forwarding ASIC?

Here’s an excellent video that demonstrates this process.

Dear Experts

I have an ASR1006 with SIP-10G and embedded service processor 40G and I will install 4 modules over the SIP 10G

  • two modules SPA-5x1GE-V2
  • two modules SPA-1X10GE-L-V2

do we require additional SIP-10G
