Ciao,
I've been trying to give a new life to an 1801 router for a few days now. I replaced the RAM and the Compact Flash card, after having tested it on another device. The router boots, but only in ROMMON mode.
I'm currently getting this message: %SMC-2-BAD_ID_HW: Failed Identification Test in 0/-1/-1
I think it's a cookie configuration problem but unfortunately after several hours of searching, I haven't been able to find any indication of the (precise) cookie data structure so that I can re-enter them.
If someone can give me a better idea, I'd be grateful.

You say that you tested RAM and compact flash on another device. What kind of device was it? I am wondering if there is now a valid image for the router to boot.
It would be helpful if you would boot the router again, copy and post all of the messages generated in the boot process.

Ciao Rick,
the device I tested the RAM and CF on is an 1801 identical.
This is the boot message:

Thanks for the update. It is good to know that you did test on an equivalent Cisco router. A couple of points:
- the message about "Failed Identification Test in 0/-1/-1 [7/0]" is interesting. Is it possible that some parts of this router have been replaced with other parts?
- can you provide a listing of the content of flash?
02-06-2025 12:04 PM
Rick,
the motherboard does not show any signs of work, so I believe no part has been replaced.
The content of the Compact Flash is only 4 files:
- adsl_alc_2190.bin
- c180x-advipservicesk9-mz.124-4.XC
- conf
- vlan.dat
Personally I think that the hexadecimal table with the cookies is not correct. I read around that some values concern the PID and the Serial Number of the motherboard, for this reason I was asking if there is a specific document that indicates the parts that make up the cookie data structure. This way I could try to rebuild it and see if the error goes away also because I have access to the rommon priv.
Regards,
Giulio.

@giulio-leone-71
From logs we can see :
The error "%SMC-2-BAD_ID_HW: Failed Identification Test in 0/-1/-1" suggests that your Cisco 1801 router is experiencing a hardware identification failure,
it seems that incompatible hardware: If you installed third-party or unsupported RAM/Flash, the router may reject it.

and then save all / rommon > sync
reboot again / rommon > reset
also you can check register (after the booting) = confreg
if there not register you can add also this
rommon > confreg 0x2102
rommon > reset
Thanks !

Ciao @Joshqun Ismayilov,
I reloaded the cookie with the instructions you sent.
The message "%SMC-2-BAD_ID_HW: Failed Identification Test in 0/-1/-1" no longer appears.
Now it gives me the error "Wrong IOS image for the router".
I tried the tftpdnld procedure by reloading the IOS image (c180x-advipservicesk9-mz.124-4.XC.bin). But the error persists.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion.
Just one question. Isn't there an updated document that explains the cookie data set?
Regards,
G.
02-08-2025 07:47 AM
Thanks for the update. The message Wrong IOS image for the router is surprising. Is this the image that was originally on the router or did it come from some other machine? I note that this image is Advanced IP Services and I wonder if the licensing on this router is something more basic.
The original post says that you replaced the compact flash card. Can you try going back to that card and see what happens?
02-09-2025 02:56 AM
Ciao Rick
in response to your questions:
- the image is the original that I found in the router's CF
- unfortunately the Cisco website for EOL articles does not allow further investigation
- I performed the test with the old card but I got the same result.
I tried this image again with the same CF in two (sic!) other identical c1801, with success.
This old guy just doesn't want to know about getting back on track.
Buona domenica,
G.
Ps.: I still believe that the cookie is corrupt, but without a complete specification of the cookie dataset I don't know how to verify this statement.

G
Thanks for the update. And for confirming that the image is the one on the original flash. And for confirming that the image works successfully on other 1801 routers. I believe that you may be correct in believing that the cookie is corrupted. Unfortunately I do not have further suggestions about how to recover this device.
