How does the IR829 deliver PoE?

Hello team.

I will be installing an IR829 in a bus, and it will be sourced with 12VDC.

I'm figuring out how the IR829 can deliver PoE in its Ethernet ports.

Is there any additional board or power source for delivering PoE in this boxes?

Can all the 4 ports deliver PoE and/or PoE+?

Documentation seems useless for this question.

Thanks in advance.

Nor.

Power Over Ethernet (PoE)

The IR829 has an optional PoE accessory (IR800-IL-POE). When installed, it supplies a maximum of 30.8W shared between the 4 GE LAN ports (GI1-GI4). The Power can be distributed among the ports in the following manner:

  • If one port supports PoE+ (30W), then the other ports have no PoE.

  • If 2 ports support PoE (15.4 W), then the other ports have no PoE.

  • All 4 ports can support 7.7 W per port.

Note

The router cannot be upgraded for PoE in the field.

You will need a PoE daughterboard, IR800-IL-POE.

can the POE module be retrofitted to the IR829 routers?

Yes, the module can be retrofitted.
Don't forget that this part also includes a large power supply. This power supply will drive the PoE card and the PoE to the ports.

Thank you Leo, my use case is automotive, so I have 12VDC available. Does the IR829 step up the voltage to 54VDC or do I need to fit the vehicle with an inverted to 220VAC (our country standard in SA)?

Uhhhhh ... I really don't have any idea.
You may need to get an inverter to convert from DC to AC.

Hello @Leo Laohoo and company,

do you know if there's some docs about IR800-IL-POE?

For example, how big is the power supply?

Does this module have an external port to connect the power supply?

Can the the power supply be mounted on a DIN rail?

How can I power the power supply?

I couldn't find a single page about it.

Thanks for any help!

The box will probably come with the following:

  1. The PoE daughter card;
  2. "mounting posts" and s_crews;
  3. A very large power supply with four terminated pins; and
  4. Anti-static strap.

The large power supply will replace the existing one.  The daughter card will need installed using the mounting posts and the s_crews.  Then use the new power supply to power up the router.
Once the router has boot up, use the command "sh power inline" to verify if the daughter card has actually booted up or not.

Are you sure? The docs says that the router cannot be upgraded on the field i.e. it must be ordered with PoE.

My feeling is that the 125W power supply is enough for PoE too...

I agree.
Officially, the PoE daughter card and power supply are "factory installed".
