HWIC-1ADSL Firmware Problems

I'm having problems upgrading the ADSL firmware on a HWIC-1ADSL card, which is necessary to overcome some incompatibilities with BT's network in the UK. The card is installed in a 1921 router and the IOS version is 15.0.1M3.

I've uploaded firmware 4.0.18 to the router (which is meant to fix the problems we're experiencing), renaming the file to adsl_alc_20190.bin, but the router appears to ignore this file. Instead, running the command "show dsl int atm0/0/0" shows that the embedded firmware is being used (4.0.15).

Any ideas? Command output below:

Router#dir flash:
Directory of usbflash0:/

    1  -rw-    45789800  Sep 30 2010 02:18:54 +01:00  c1900-universalk9-mz.SPA.150-1.M3.bin

Re: HWIC-1ADSL Firmware Problems

Have you performed a reload after the firmware upgrade?

After reload , verify "sh dsl int atm 0"

Re: HWIC-1ADSL Firmware Problems

Yes I did perform a reload afterwards, but it made no difference.

In the end I managed to resolve the issue by upgrading the IOS. I upgraded from 15.0.1M3 to 15.0.1M5 and after rebooting the new firmware loaded!

I suspect it was probably a bug in 15.0.1M3 causing the router not to pick up the firmware file.

Re: HWIC-1ADSL Firmware Problems

Is the 4.0.18 firmware compatible with the HWIC-1ADSL-M card?

We are only getting 10mb down sync on the current firmware 4.0.15. It's definitely not the line as a standard BT router syncs at 24mbps.

We are running IOS 15.0.1M4 and not M5. I tried doing as you did with the file on the flash but it didnt pick it up

Re: HWIC-1ADSL Firmware Problems

Out of interest, have you tried 4.0.17? It claims to be "ADSL firmware version 4.0.17 for UK annex M support only.  Compatible with Huawei MA5300 DSLAM, EADB line card." I cannot find 4.0.18 on-line anymore.

If you have a support contract it may be worth raising a TAC case. I'm running an internal firmware (AMR-E-9.0.140.bin) prvided by TAC which gave me more line stability than 4.0.18. This is with a standard HWIC-1ADSL.

Re: HWIC-1ADSL Firmware Problems

You are correct about the bug. I came across the same problem last year and raised a TAC ticket. There was a bug identified on the 1921, something to do with "reading of adsl phy  firmware from usb flash during IOS boot is not happening". It was fixed in various IOS builds last autumn.

Re: HWIC-1ADSL Firmware Problems

It's going to take 30 days to get support contract and need running within a week

This is what I don't like about Cisco they make it very hard to do business with. I have requested the latest IOS and modem firmware from the reseller still waiting to see if we get it. You would think on a brand new purchase you would get a limited amount of support when problems arise with it!!wi

4.0.18 and 4.0.15 are both no goes I don't have access to the others yet but will update if/when I do
