ICMP reply doesn't go to default gateway ??

Hello all,

I have a branch office whose Xerox printer won't talk to the head office terminal servers running Microsoft network load balancing on their own vlan. I should point out that all the other branches with the same printers are fine.

Each branch has a PIX firewall to the outside world and a 1721 router back to Head Office; the printer's gateway is the 1721. When pinging the printer from any NLB terminal server I can see the printer reply, but, the reply shows up on the PIX - not the 1721. For kicks I put my laptop on the same vlan as the terminal servers and found that I could successfully ping the printer.

Does anybody out there have any suggestions or pointers on how I can troubleshoot this?

Hi Michael,

Could you provide more details about your branch office setup.

You have mentioned that the Default gateway of the Printer is 1721 router,however a PIX is involved in between the printer and the 1721. In what mode you have deployed the PIX???

If the ICMP reply is observed in the PIX but not in the 1721 leads us to assume that it may be a routing issue and some problem with the firewall config. Would you be able to provide us the config snapshot of the branch office pix and if possible a network diagram to understand the ip address schema involved in this setup.

The PIX and the 1721 are on the same LAN as the printer but the PIX is not in between the router/printer.

I did manage yesterday (monday) to get the remote terminal servers talking to the printer; it looks like it may have been a default gateway issue on the 1721 pointing to the PIX in combination with a requirement to reboot the printer to clear it's routing table of the old stuff.
