IR829 image upgrade error

Hi,

I have problem with upgrading IOS in Cisco IR829. I used image universal k9 version SPA 158-3 M2a bundle, router was shipped with older version (15.7). I run command

bundle install flash:ir800-universalk9-bundle.SPA.158-3.M2a.bin

Router was doing something and during upgrading Hypervisor image error appeared

No more space in bootstrap

Failed to install hypervisor image

I used same bundle image for upgrading some older routers (delivered in 2019) without any problem. So it is quite strange, that new router (made in November 2019) without any previous configuration has problem with free space.

Any ideas?

The question is what else is taking up space in the internal flash? If you are physically near the router, you could put the bundle on a USB drive and install it from there. If the bundle from the old version is still there, you could delete that. Obviously don't delete the file that it actually uses to boot from, just the old bundle. :-)

As I wrote, the router is new, just unpacked from the box. So I can't delete anything on the flash:
I understand, that install from usb drive can be a solution. But imagine upgrading later, after router is be placed somewhere far from office and physical access will not be easy, or takes much time. And if something worked and now not with the same type of router...

I suspect this is a bug.
Can you post the complete output to the command "sh run | i boot".

I tried to download different image (version 15.9) and I have same issue. Fresh router with no configuration.

Ok, so you want to upgrade to 15.9(3)M, right?
So do this:

conf t
 boot sytem flash flash:ir800-universalk9-bundle.SPA.159-3.M.bin
 end
wr
reboot

After the router boots 15.9(3)M try unpacking it.

Yes, at least 15.8 (some features we need). But this will not work.

ERROR Image name ... is invalid (Exec format error).

I will try to downgrade to 15.6 a then upgrade from this version (it should work). And report the bug.

Any update? experiencing the same behavior on IR829 fresh out of box

Yes, same behavior. Upgrade from 15.7 to 15.6 or 15.8 was not successful.

I found some ORPHAN hypervisors in bootstrap.  Below steps worked for me.

1) Backup config

2) Force modem into ROMMON1 by unplugging and powering device on with reset button depressed. Release when POE light illuminates (~15sec). Ctrl+C or send Break just after boot.

3) dir to show bootstrap:

bootstrap:
4096 Nov 7 06:05 ORPHAN1
4096 Jan 28 18:51 ORPHAN2
24143729 Mar 4 20:42 ir800-hv.srp.SPA.3.0.42

4) Use “delete bootstrap:/ORPHAN1 + 2” to clean up un-used images

5) boot ir800-hv.srp.SPA.<ver>

6) bundle install flash:

_mirfanmy96
Level 1
Level 1

Try this instead,

clear the bootstrap orphan thingy,

run this command :

test if show hidden

dir bootstrap:

delete /recursive /force bootstrap:ORPHAN1

once the bootstrap has enough space, then you can proceed with bundle installation.

Do take note, do not delete the hypervisor image.
