Yes, Authentication is used in almost all network environments for security purposes. Its a good practice to have authentication implemented so as to protect your routing domain from ad-hoc network devices to become part of your routing domain.

Yes, authentication is available for almost all protocols. There may be variations in the authentication methods supported but there is security available for all protocols.
